I am certain that Sam did return to the bunker on occasion, when he needed some small thing and Dean Jnr likely has the key and contact with their friends. My headcanon is that Sam did pass knowledge to him, at the very least as a Man of Letters since he did have the tattoo.

That’s right! He did! Okay, this is fitting more into my cynical theory that the finale was all set up for a reboot. Somehow, some way, Dean Jr. is going to have to spring his dad and uncle from heaven.
