I skipped the last question because for me it was considerably better than 'could've been worse', but not perfect.
My quibbles, though, were fairly minor. Like most people, I thought they did a poor job of aging Sam up (the deathbed aging was alright, but the younger aging was soooo bad) and the whole 'wife' situation was...weird. No screen time, one blurry image, no photos in the house, but Sam was still wearing the wedding ring on his deathbed, so it's not like they divorced or something. Mostly though, I thought the episode hit the right notes and I've been an emotional wreck ever since I watched it...the J's performances were outstanding! 💔

J2's performance was amazing! Although, I suspect it wasn't all performance. After all, they were also saying goodbye to working together every day. They are professionally going their own ways. There were moments that it didn't completely feel like Sam and Dean -- like when Sam says he can't do it alone Dean smiles and says, "yes, you can." I know that is a call-back to Dean saying he can't do it alone in S1. I recall Jensen saying that Jared has been torn up about the end all season, it felt like him reassuring Jared that he can do it alone. That he will be right there with him in his heart. Maybe, I'm completely wrong, but I'm liking this head canon anyway so I'm keeping it.

No, I agree. There was a lot of Jared and Jensen in that scene, for all the reasons you mention. I think it would have been obvious to fandom, but I hope to GA it just looked like brilliant acting. Because I'd really like them to win an award for their acting!! Maybe a SAG award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama series...but they'd have to win jointly! Because SamnDean/J2...they come as a pair!

I have to believe the blurry wife was deliberately vague, for all the reasons you point out. I figured he still wore his wedding ring because she died, maybe before that scene when Dean Jr is doing his homework in the diningroom? Certainly by the time of the scene in the Impala in the garage, Sam seemed to be alone, so blurry wife was dead and son had left for college and Sam was reliving his grief for Dean (every loss in his life makes him grieve hard for Dean again). I loved that scene, despite the bad makeup and hair. We really get to see how Sam never stopped grieving his brother.

Yes, this ended up being my head canon as well. The emotional wreck that I was in the immediate aftermath of the finale just wanted a bit more guidance as to what happened to Sam after Dean died, but leaving it vague and letting us fill in the gaps ourselves was probably the right call!
