It’s a wrap for us this year – thank you so much to our participants, you guys have given us some lovely art and stories this round. Now, as the evening gathers round on this October evening, it’s time to settle in and enjoy some dark stories.

Every town kid goes to Mirror Pool at least once. It’s a dare. A rite of passage. Let’s see if you’re brave enough to look into the Mirror. Poke the ghost who inhabits there. Everyone goes once… and no one goes twice. They forget that the pool is there and push awareness to the back of their minds, to the same place where childhood terrors and the monster in the closet are banished as years go by. That hidden corner of oblivion from where the dread will resurface later when one is walking down a lonely alley at night and thinks they hear whispers in the dark. Fears buried deep, but not erased.

After taking on the responsibility of a troubled you, the Padalecki’s start to see a change in their son’s behavior. Their once vibrant, happy teen seems to have built a wall around himself, curling in on himself and becoming introverted. Any time they ask Jared about it, he shuts down. And getting any information out of Jensen is like pulling teeth. It leaves them wondering if bringing Jensen into their home was the right decision. It was it the beginning of their worst nightmare?

Jared and Jensen have been happily married for years, but a debilitating diagnosis threatens to take that all away. Jared does what he can to help, but at the end of the day, there’s no saving his husband. It’s almost a miracle when a mysterious pharmaceutical group seeks Jensen’s participation in an even more mysterious drug trial. At first, the little, red pills are a blessing, but Jensen is changing, and Jared is going to learn just how far he’s willing to go for love.
After all, the label did say there would be side effects.

It doesn’t matter to Jared that he’s been remanded to an institution for the criminally insane. What matters to Jared is Jensen and he will do anything to be reunited with the man he loves.

Discussion Sunday: A/B/O & Top/Bottom Dynamics

I started reading an A/B/O fic recently that I wasn't too sure about. It included a character that I'm not too fond of in general and even less when involved in a way that they could come between my otp, but I took a chance on the fic for two reasons: a. because the writer is terrific, and b. because the fic was tagged "unreliable narrator."

After the second chapter I think it was, I commented that I wasn't sure that I'd be able to continue reading much further because of said character/narrator's behavior to one side of my otp (and because of gender swap), but I would give one more chapter a try. The writer responded that they understood that maybe this fic wasn't for me and suggested some other non-gender swap, A/B/O fics they'd written. Then, I read the third chapter and responded, "Unreliable narrator indeed!" I am now completely into this fic. It reminds me how tagging can set up expectations and guide possible readers, buuuuut as a writer, I have resisted tagging top/bottom dynamics.

A little history here. I started posting SPN fic back in 2011, and back then, tagging wasn't much of a thing as many of you know. Fics were posted with title, pairing, very brief summary, and a disclaimer that the characters didn't belong to writer and the story was completely fictional. Reading fic was more of an adventure, right? The destination was the pairing but the journey was pretty much unknown. There was no map. I discovered a few squicks and even more kinks. I occasionally stopped part way through, but if the fic was well written, that was rare. I don't remember anyone complaining. (Of course, that was an era when readers accepted that the writer was in control. The most we could do was throw the book across the room, if we were unhappy with where the narrative went. Looking at you Ann Rice RIP.)

A few years ago all that changed. Not only were requests for trigger warnings common, but demands for tagging top/bottom became strident. I am completely on board with trigger warnings, and as a writer, I do my best to tag issues that could cause psychological/emotional harm to a reader. The reader should have the choice to decide whether they want to read the fic or not. However, I think there's a difference between a legitimate trigger and a squick. Top/bottom dynamics are a squick. One may have an icky reaction to bottom!Dean (although, I can't imagine why), but disgust isn't the same as being triggered.

From the perspective of a writer, there are a couple of problems with tagging top/bottom. One is that, speaking for myself, I don't always know going into a fic if dynamics might change making it impossible to tag a WIP accordingly. That being said, I have posted chapter warnings for triggers, if something I hadn't anticipated comes up. The other thing is that I don't want to ruin the plot for the majority of readers to please a minority.

Maybe one reason that readers like A/B/O fics is that they are usually tagged with who the alpha and omega characters are. Top/bottom is laid out already, and if those character traits are present at the beginning of the fic, that works for me. But if they aren't, I don't want to know. I don't want the summary or the tags too give to much of the plot away. I know there are readers who want everything laid out before they start. They don't want surprises of any kind, apparently.

I'd like to know how others feel about this subject. What kind of reader/writer are you? What other issues do you see related to this subject?
